Tonkin Gulf Resolution
- In the Tonkin Gulf Resolution, President Lyndon Johnson was granted authority by congress to increase U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War
- Two days prior, U.S. ships in the Gulf of Tonkin had been attacked by the North Vietnamese. The President had dispatched U.S. planes against the attackers and asked Congress to pass a resolution to support him
- The resolution promised “to promote the maintenance of international peace and security in southeast Asia” (On August 7th)
The Tet Offensive
- On January 31st of 1968, 70,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces launched the Tet Offensive, which was a series of attacks on over 100 towns and cities in Southern Vietnam
- It was an attempt by the leader or the Communist people's army of Vietnam to foment rebellion among the southern vietnamese and encourage the U.S. to stop supporting the Saigon regime
- They managed to hold off attacks from the PAVN, and the news coverage of the they offensive shocked and dismayed the people of America
- People began to strongly oppose the war and tried to get rid of support for it
